In this study, for the first time, we have carried out three dimensional transient magnetostructural analysis of a Magnetic Pulse welding (MPW) system which welds two tubular work pieces of dissimilar conducting materials. For this purpose a finite element model (FEM) is developed using the commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics® . Transient electromagnetic analysis is fully coupled with transient nonlinear structural analysis to investigate the welding process. Due to the very nature of air-gap in the design of MPW system, a minor non-uniform compression is observed in the form of non-uniform stress at the upper & lower half parts of the outer (called 'flyer') pipe. To efficiently handle skin-depth effect in eddy current analysis, the pipe is meshed with 7 layers and 'Limped method' is used to drive the current.
